Retro Chic: Information Discovery Networks

Quiet Tueseday morning is perfect from blogging – sun, absence of noise, fresh neewsfeeds and fruit – so here comes a blog with some recent thoughts. One of the most interesting things for me today is to follow how the “discovery” feature of the Web is growing in prominence. I recently discovered social networks that I didn’t even [...]

  • Food, Water, Internet

While I was waiting to have an internet connection installed in my new apartment, it become obvious to me how neglected the need for an internet connection is in France (I am not saying it is better elsewhere). In my opinion, it is a basic human need, like food and water. It should come with [...]

  • Belgrade-Wien-Paris-Hagenberg-Karlsruhe

Last week in Karlsruhe, I’ve got an honorable mention for the poster designed by my friend Uros in Hagenberg, following the conception I’ve sent him from Paris, describing the ontology I’ve published in Wien and created earlier in the SpeakEasy cafe in Belgrade.

  • Vienna Checklist for a True Hedonist

For true hedonists, an introduction to this post is quite unnecessary; they can pass directly to the list. For the others let there be known that Vienna in the summer is one of the best places of the world for feeling great. Delights of every kind, brought from all parts of the world are available [...]

  • Cross-platform Chat With Digsby

It’s been a long time since I have been so excited about an application. It’s Digsby, a multiprotocol IM client that allows you to integrate your chat contact lists from various IM platforms. I’ve used this kind of applications before (Meboo, etc.) but was never really satisfied with the interface (I prefer the minimalistic gTalk [...]

  • Showing Off, Just a Little Bit

In the just released Encyclopedia of Information Communication Technology, edited by Antonio Cartelli, you can find an article of Uros, Jelena and me about software agents, written more then a year ago. (See the list of contributors.)

  • Rainy Night in Georgia

Well spring has its rainy days (and nights), so I’ve managed to find a little time and create a webpage to represent my recent project – TagFusion, as I announced earlier. Please feel free to leave your comments about it, as well as any suggestions for future work. I am myself aware of some possibilities [...]

  • TagFusion – my “new” project

A lot of time has passed since I last blogged, and a lot of time since I had what to blog about but I didn’t. I have finished my graduation thesis in December, and since then many people were asking for some details about it, so here they are. My project is about collaborative [...]

  • A new way to represent tree structures

    Atom Interface

    Category: Personal article (non-blog)

    Topic: Human Computer Interaction

    Author: Krystian Samp

    Year created: 2007

Krystian has just sent me a link to his new web page about Atom Interface. It is his project related to representation of tree structures. He uses the atom metaphor to represent structured information in an innovative way. (You can see a very comprehensive explanation in his YouTube video)

He also takes into consideration the basic usability guidelines (like users’ ability to learn easily) and I find it very applicable in many domains.

By my opinion, the most interesting thing about this new way of representation are the lines that connect concepts. It seems to me that those connections between atoms represent a promising area of future research.

Summer School on Multimedia Semantics 2007

    Event type: Conference

    Date: 2007-07-15

    Rating: 5 out of 5

A few days ago I returned from Scotland where I attended the Summer School on Multimedia Semantics. Impressions are really great. It was a nice opportunity to meet a lot of interesting people, mostly PhD students, and become familiar with their work.

I would like to point out one project that I think has a meaningful usage of semantics in order to present multimedia content. Semantics is, as I see it, realy used for necessary purposes, unlike many projects that use ontologies just to be able to state that in papers and present ther work as semantic web-related.

Scotland was a great choice for venue. There are many attractions nearby so you can extend your visit a bit longer then the summer school duration to enjoy natural beauties and historical places. Glasgow in particular is not a kind of place where you can walk safely during the night, but there are some interesting places (e.g., Willow Tea Rooms) to visit during the day.

You can see some pictures here.
